An Encouraging Word from Marvin
How soon will spring be here? I don’t know about you but I am already weary of colds, the flu and single-digit temperatures! But I have discovered that I have absolutely no power over the weather. So what are we to do? I am trying to imagine dogwoods and azaleas blooming and spring arriving early. Maybe if we all do that winter won’t be as tough on us!
While we are imaging, let’s keep imagining and dreaming as a church. On Sunday I used a quote that has been attributed to J. R. R. Tolkien, though that attribution has been contested by some. The quote is simple: “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.” Whether Tolkien was the source or Nathaniel Hawthorne (another person to whom the quote is attributed) the power is still there.
The church in America is facing challenges we have not faced in a century. We have important work to do and it is important that we know the nature of that work. But we can never lose focus that ours is a God of visions and dreams. As I said on Sunday, I hope you will join me in praying for wisdom so we can dream God-sized dreams for the future of our wonderful congregation.
I look forward to being with you on Sunday as we consider the importance of a family reunion in morning worship. On Sunday afternoon we will celebrate his upcoming retirement with Mitch Whisnant. The reception will begin at 2 PM and the program will begin at 2:30 PM. I know you will want to be here.
